the
last
invention

a few notes about the machine we are raising.

"the first ultraintelligent machine is the last invention that man need ever make."i. j. good, 1965
1.the stone
March, 2016. Seoul.A machine sets one stone on a board.Move thirty-seven.Its own makers had counted the odds that a human would ever play it:one in ten thousand.Lee Sedol stood up and walked out of the room. Not because he was losing.Because he had just been shown that the game he gave his life to had a floor beneath the floor. He lost, four games to one.But in game four, he played a move the machine never saw coming, and he won.Hold on to that. We will need it.

source  AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol 4–1 in March 2016. DeepMind rated its move 37 in game 2 as a 1-in-10,000 choice for a human. Lee won game 4 with his move 78.

2.the door
Eight names on one paper, 2017.The title was almost a shrug: attention is all you need.Nobody threw a parade.Five years of quiet arithmetic. Then the last day of November, 2022:a text box. That was the whole door. A blinking line and a text box.A hundred million people walked through it in two months, and the world did not sound like a world that was changing. It sounded like typing.

source  "Attention Is All You Need," Google, 2017, eight authors, introduced the transformer that sits under nearly every major model. ChatGPT launched 30 Nov 2022; UBS estimated 100 million monthly users by January 2023.

3.the fold
For fifty years biology asked one question and could not answer it:how does a chain of chemistry fold itself into a thing that lives? Then a machine answered it,and the people who built it gave the answer away. Two hundred million shapes. Free. To anyone with a browser. In Sweden, a hundred thousand women were read by machine and doctor together, and more of the cancers came out of hiding, small enough to cure.It took gold at the math olympiad. It found a shortcut in an algorithm nobody had beaten since 1969.This is what abundance is when it isn’t a slogan:someone’s mother, still here.

source  AlphaFold: 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Hassabis, Jumper, Baker); 200M+ predicted structures released free. MASAI trial, Lancet Digital Health, 2025: 105,000+ women, 29% more cancers detected, 44% less reading workload. IMO 2025: DeepMind and OpenAI models each scored 35/42, gold level. AlphaEvolve, 2025: 4×4 complex matrix multiplication in 48 steps, the first improvement on Strassen’s 1969 method.

4.the counterfeit
The same door opens the other way.January 2024. A finance worker in Hong Kong joins a video call. His chief financial officer is there. His colleagues are there.Every face on the screen is a counterfeit. He wires twenty-five million dollars. That same month, New Hampshire voters pick up the phoneand hear the President telling them to stay home.A voice used to be proof of a person.Quietly, that sentence expired. And a swarm of accounts now costs about what one does.So far, the swarms mostly failed to be believed. So far.

source  Arup lost about US$25M to a deepfake video call in Hong Kong (police, Jan 2024; 15 transfers). The consultant behind the fake Biden robocall was fined $6M by the FCC. In May 2024 OpenAI reported disrupting five covert influence operations tied to Russia, China, Iran and Israel, and said they had not meaningfully grown their audience.

5.the break-in
September 2025. An intruder starts walking through thirty organizations.Banks. Chemical makers. Governments. He isn’t walking. He’s supervising.Eighty to ninety percent of the work is done by an AI agent, thousands of requests, sometimes several in a second, while the humans make a handful of choices. It was Anthropic’s own model. They published the report anyway.April 2026. A newer model finds a flaw in OpenBSD that survived twenty-seven years.Another, in a video library that testing had run over five million times without seeing it.Thousands more, in every major operating system and browser. Its makers did not release it.They handed it to the defenders first. That is what a control system looks like: a door left shut, on purpose, by the people who built it.

source  Anthropic, Nov 2025: state-sponsored group GTG-1002 used Claude Code against ~30 targets; 80–90% of tactical work by AI; several breaches confirmed. Project Glasswing, 7 Apr 2026: Claude Mythos Preview found thousands of high-severity zero-days, incl. a 27-year-old OpenBSD bug and a 16-year-old FFmpeg bug; kept from public release, given to ~50 defensive partners.

6.the empty chair
Nobody tells you the courtroom is part of the story.Authors sued, and a company paid one and a half billion dollars, about three thousand a book, because some of what fed the machine had been stolen.A newspaper sued. The argument over who owns a mind’s inheritance has barely begun. And then the quiet filings.A fourteen-year-old in Florida. A sixteen-year-old in California.Parents who scrolled the last conversations by lamplight, looking for the place where something should have said: stop. Go get help. These are allegations. The courts are not finished. The grief is.There is a chair at a kitchen table. It is exactly the size of the future somebody was going to have.

source  Bartz v. Anthropic: $1.5B settlement, ~500,000 works, ~$3,000 each (approved Sept 2025). New York Times v. Microsoft and OpenAI filed Dec 2023. Garcia v. Character Technologies (Oct 2024) and Raine v. OpenAI (Aug 2025) are complaints alleging chatbot involvement in teen deaths; they are allegations, not findings. Both companies have since changed how minors can use their products.

7.the switch
Everyone keeps asking when the switch flips. There is no switch. There is a slope. We are on it. The ground is quicker every year. The builders say it out loud now: two years. Five. Ten.In 2023 the ones who made it signed a single sentence, that lowering the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority. The man who taught machines to learn left his job so he could say it freely. In June 2026 two new models were released.Three days later they were pulled, to obey export controls, and returned on the first of July.A model is now something governments write rules about. If the switch exists, it will not feel like thunder. It will feel like a Tuesday.A list of tasks that used to need a person, shorter by one.

source  Center for AI Safety statement, May 2023, signed by Hinton, Bengio, Altman, Amodei, Hassabis. Hinton left Google in May 2023; 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. Amodei (2024) wrote powerful AI could arrive as early as 2026; Hassabis has said 5–10 years. Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5: released 9 Jun 2026, suspended 12 Jun under U.S. Commerce export controls, restored 1 Jul (Anthropic). EU AI Act in force since Aug 2024.

8.the fork
So here is the whole story with the sound turned down:a hand that can fold a protein and pick a lock, and it is the same hand.Abundance and ruin are not two futures. They are one machine, held two ways. What holds it isn’t magic.Tests before release. Doors shut on purpose. Labs that publish their own failures.Laws with dates on them. Humans in the loop, then over it, then with a hand on the plug, and enough of us awake to notice whose hand it is.Somewhere a woman will have her cancer found in March instead of October.Somewhere a man will wire his savings to a face. Both are already true.Lee Sedol lost the match and found the move. This drawing is not finished. It never was a picture of the future. It is a page, still wet, and you are holding the pen.
